When Detective Inspector Amaia Salazar is called in to investigate the death of a baby girl, she finds a suspicious mark across the child's face - an ominous sign that points to murder. The baby's father was caught trying to run away with the body, whether from guilt or grief nobody can be sure. And when the girl's grandmother tells the police that the `Inguma' was responsible - an evil demon of Basque mythology that kills people in their sleep - Amaia is forced to return to the Baztan valley for answers.

With Offering to the storm I have come to the end of the Baztan trilogy, It is a series of books I have enjoyed immensely. These books carry with them a mix of great crime story and the spiritual and legends of this area.  For me, this author is defiantly up there with all the other greats to come out of the crime genre. So knowing this was the last in the trilogy I came to it with a mixture of feelings. I was excited to delve back into the world of Detective Salazar and see what she was up to, but at the same time, I knew that I would be sad to come to the end and that this would be the last time I would get to read a new book with these characters.

When it comes to Salazar she has what can only be described as having a messed up family. Throughout these books, we have got to see just how much havoc a family can cause someone and how even as an adult these claws dig in, and the more you try to pull them out the deeper in they bury themselves. Salazar has shown time and again that she will fight with everything she can to try for a better life. On top of this, she wants to do her job and solve every case no matter how personal it gets at times. It is with all this and so much more that has made the time I spent with her mean so much to me. The author created a character that has become more than the words on the page. To me, she feels like a living breathing person, which as far as I can see is the best compliment I can pay to an author.

Thought out these books the author has chosen to take on some very dark subjects when it comes to the crimes committed. With offering to the storm she explores a topic that most people would find deplorable. The murder of a baby is something that anyone would find horrifying, not to mention how any parent could come to terms with it. It is a topic that cuts right o the heart of us. While I have no children of my own, I have friends and family who do and I can not begin to fathom the hurt and pain it would bring to them. Along with this, the author tackles sudden infant death, while it serves as a plot point, and to add tension to an already emotional plot I felt the author did it as much as one can with care. She does what I can only imagine is a realistic job of showing the damage it does to those family's, How do you reconcile a death that has no real explanation.

If this all sounds depressing, you would not be far off. While the author has created a story that kept me turning the pages wanting to find out how it ended, It also took a lot out of me. This is an emotional journey wrapped up in an interesting case. As with the previous novels, she adds a great deal of legends and myth into her story. While this time the legends are a little bit more universal it still adds her own flavor to the plot.

This was a book that perfectly fit in with the series, It never missed a beat and served as a great end to this set of stories. While they take a lot from there readers I think it is worth it. For fans of dark and well thought out crime books, you should defiantly take a stop off in the world of Detective Inspector Amaia Salazar.
