The world is messing with our minds. Rates of stress and anxiety are rising. A fast, nervous planet is creating fast and nervous lives. We are more connected, yet feel more alone. And we are encouraged to worry about everything from world politics to our body mass index. How can we stay sane on a planet that makes us mad? How do we stay human in a technological world? How do we feel happy when we are encouraged to be anxious? After experiencing years of anxiety and panic attacks, these questions became urgent matters of life and death for Matt Haig. And he began to look for the link between what he felt and the world around him.

This is an author I have read more than once before, His works of fiction always have a way of leaving better off than I was before. They are uplifting tales of what it means to be human, and despite what may come our way there is something better out there if we go looking for it. This is the first time I have read anything nonfiction by him. I was hoping for something that would bring that same feeling by the time I got to the end.

Which each of his books I have had the pleasure of reading before I have always felt that I learned a lesson by the end. This is usual formed by his inspired way his characters interact with each other. This time however due to it being Non-fiction the message he is trying to get over is a lot more direct, He looks into us through the lens of himself. With an exploration of how we know choose to live our lives, and in turn the harm this can do to us mentally. He explores the way we have taken to using social media and technology as a form of modern self-harm. It is through this thought that he looks to seek out redemption and a way to find balance in this topsy-turvy world we now call home. The is a lot to be taken away from this book if nothing else it's that while we may all be a little broken there is no reason to let it define us and in turn hold us back from living our lives.

With short chapters, the book flows quickly and makes for an interesting mix of wise, funny and thought-provoking. It shows that we are not alone in the way we think and the emotions we feel towards our world. Nervous planet takes all that and gives you a little bit of help, some ways in which to better cope with the thoughts we don't speak aloud. I think to say this is a self-help book would not be the right name to use. It is a phrase that is thrown around way to much these days and covers far too big umbrella. What Haig I think does better than most others is say that it's ok to be a little or a lot broken. It's how to recognize this about our selves and then in turn how we move forward from there and try to work at being better. When it comes to this book it for me was a very personal read, and each person will take something different away from it, And therein lies the beauty of the words in this book. It takes a special kind of writer to make you want to feel happy, to accept that there are things we can change if we simply stop, take a breath and look at our self-destructive habits with clarity.

This book left me with a smile and a feeling of peace, The more I read by this author the more I know I will forever pick up his new books as they come out. They work for me like small island I can run to when everything gets to be too much. It will work for a lot of people for a lot of different reason no matter your background or the place you find yourself in. So pick a copy up grab your favorite drink and spend a little time with it. I hope you will be left feeling the better for it.
