When the two strangers turn up at Rowena Cooper's isolated Colorado farmhouse, she knows instantly that it's the end of everything. For the two haunted and driven men, on the other hand, it's just another stop on a long and bloody journey. And they still have many miles to go, and victims to sacrifice, before their work is done. For San Francisco homicide detective Valerie Hart, their trail of corpses - women abducted, tortured and left with a seemingly random series of objects inside them - has brought her from obsession to the edge of physical and psychological destruction. And she's losing hope of making a breakthrough before that happens.

This book was another case of me taking a risk without knowing anything about it. While I was at the bookstore I saw someone pick a copy up and after reading the back with a whole lot of serious concentration go and by it so I thought what the hell pick a copy up and add it to my pile from that day. After getting home I read the back and realized that this book sounds like the sort of thing I properly would have picked up of my own accord anyway. Which is handy. Having it been a little while since I picked up a procedural crime book I was looking forward to getting back in the saddle.

In the course of this book, we get to see events from multiple perspectives of those that are affected by these twos murderess rampage. This really worked out well as I got to know each of these character well enough to sustain my interest in how they each finished the book. As we delve inside the world of these two killers we a taken to some very dark places. All the while as the author showed me just how depraved the actions of these two would get he also took the time to give me the story behind them. It worked well to give context as it allowed me inside their collective minds. And showed a human side to the monsters the would become.

Heart is a detective with a full plate to handle both problems at home and work she is struggling to keep her head above water. For me, it didn't really feel like she brought anything new to the genre. She is damaged psychologically from events in her past and this leads to a poor judgment at times. But as with all good cops, she is fighting to solve the cases before another body turns up. This book, however, shows it's strength in a  full complement of other interesting support characters that at no point did I feel I was left lacking. Through these, i was allowed to experience the full horror of these killers actions. And when all is said and done she is not a bad character to have as a lead hopefully in subsequent books I will get to connect with her better and be pulled into her world.

This is a fast paced book and it keeps the tension up at every turn. throughout the book we get to switch perspective between each of our main leads. This, in turn, show how the cat and mouse are being played out in real time. I found it interesting to also be able to follow the victims progress as she tried desperately to fight for her freedom. This is exacerbated by my knowledge of what these two had already done to the other girls they had taken captive. The delivers on his promise of a dark and twisted tale, Despite its use of the vast expanses of the American highways and byways this book felt very claustrophobic. Black in his style of writing manages to make it feel like the killers are breathing right down the back of your neck. They do in many respects feel like they might just exist in real life and as such, it brings out a more primal fear in the reader.  What you end up with in this book is a creepiness that permeated off the page and into the dark shadows of your mind.

If you are looking for an intelligent crime thriller this is definitely a good place to rest for a while. Although rest is probably the last thing you will do, the story despite dealing with so many people has little time for filler and races along to it's brutal and damaging conclusion. While it didn't tick all of my boxes it definitely hit enough for this to have been far from a waste of my time.
