Margo is not like other girls. She lives in a derelict neighborhood called the Bone, in a cursed house, with her cursed mother, who hasn’t spoken to her in over two years. She lives her days feeling invisible. It’s not until she develops a friendship with her wheelchair-bound neighbor, Judah Grant, that things begin to change. When neighborhood girl, seven-year-old Neveah Anthony, goes missing, Judah sets out to help Margo uncover what happened to her. What Margo finds changes her, and with a new perspective on life, she’s determined to find evil and punish it–targeting rapists and child molesters, one by one. But hunting evil is dangerous, and Margo risks losing everything, including her own soul.

This is a book I chose to reach for in part down to my previous read, I've been on a bit of a young adult kick, especially when they delve into the dark side of things.. I think the premise sound very intriguing, this is another book looking into the darkness that can reside within us. How long can we bear witness to these things before we get spurred to action?

This is a novel that takes you deep down into a small town that's soul has died. As you read it feels like a place the sun never quite reaches. You can imagine the mold creeping up the walls and the smell of damp fills your nostrils. People here have given up on life, for the inhabitants of the bones, nothing will ever change. And it is within this dark and atmospheric environment the author leads us to her heroine.  Margo is doing her best to make it from one day to the next, While she lives with her mother she might as well be all alone. This is a woman who pays little attention to her daughter and cares not for her fate. So with Margo left to her own devices, life continues on with a depressive melancholic. It is only when events take a dramatic turn for the worst does Margo's life seem to find a purpose. This is the story of an avenging angel, Margo will no longer sit back and let the world hurt those who cannot defend themselves. She is one of those characters that challenges how we view our moral conscience. While we can view her actions as being wrong in the eyes of the law, her motives behind them I think are ones we can all understand and sympathize with. It is within these strong emotions that I found myself rooting for Margo in her mission to bring justice to those who slip through the cracks.

Fishers brings her very own unique malevolent style to her angel of death. To say that this book drips atmosphere is possible a great understatement. The bones feel so oppressive in the way it is delivered to us. You can feel this weight not only crushing down on Margo but also on us as the reader. I would say that I wanted to escape this place just as much as our lead does, you can see how this world crushes the very life of them. I was completely drawn into her world as she cuts a bloody path through those who cross her path. But it is her selection of victim that makes the violence and murder that Margo brings down seem justifiable, and one you can't find fault in. Overall this is a dark and compelling story of just how far someone can be pushed before it becomes time to fight back. Fisher has created an amazing anti-heroine for this book and you can't help but feel sympathy for her and her situation all the while rooting for her. But this is not such a straightforward path and we get plenty of twists and turns along the way. The story is complex and dark and kept me turning the pages intrigued to see what would become of Margo and those very few she chose to keep in her life.

With this one book, I think I have found an author I will return back to again. She has created a book that comes across as a disturbing modern fable of an angel seeking revenge. I could give so so much more praise for this book and author, but I would not want to take anything away from you when you come to read this book.
