One morning, she wakes to find that the little boy in her care is dead. She has no memory of what happened. And whatever the truth, her side of the story is no match for the evidence piled against her. Her only hiding place is in a new identity. A new life, with a man she has met online. But Sophie is not the only one keeping secrets.

Blood wedding is not the first time I have spent time with Pierre Lemaitre. Personally, he is by far my favorite French author. Having already read the first two books in his marvelous trilogy I thought maybe it was time to pick up one of his stand-alone novels. While his books are never massively long they do seem to pack in a hell of a punch. He is an author who seldom shy's away from grizzly scenes and the dark side of life, which for me is a bonus. The synopsis of this book seems a lot like another book I had read recently also by a French author, on that occasion I had difficulty connecting with the book. This time I had higher hopes due to my previous enjoyment of the author.

This a book of multiple viewpoints, The first part of the story is devoted to Sophie as she navigates her present situation. This is a driven woman, She is bold and courageous in her attempts to piece together what has happened to her. There where times she felt like Richard Kimble in the fugitive. I really enjoyed how once everything had fallen apart she made her plan to not only flee from the authorities but to determine what had happened to her. As the reader, you have to also offset this with her also being painted as this crazy forgetful person who may have done one of the worst things imaginable. For me, this all adds up to a very intriguing character. This author doesn't like to make things easy for his readers. This is also a book with very few supporting casts, So, for the most part, anyone Sophie encounters has there part to play in her story. This only adds to my enjoyment as I tried to work out which part of the puzzle each one played.

The story's it's self is split into three, as we get present, past and then back to the present. This worked well and as I delved into each new section you feel your self-being brought in on the terrible secrets and disturbing action that have beset her. The author's style once again reads quickly and he draws you into his story with such ease that you become desecrate to get to the truth just as much as his protagonists. This time around there is less blood spilt across the page. This is a story of mind games and the depths people will go to. It was an interesting departure from his other books. I have to say it was one that I enjoyed with all the vigor of his previous. it's one of those books where you think you have it all figure out only to be turned on its head. This has also been one of the hardest books I've reviewed as it's far to easy to give so much away. And I would never want to take that away from another reader.

As this is short I reckon you could easily make it through in an evening. It's a tense read as you become intertwined by these charterers stories. And more than once you can feel you self-wanting to shout at Sophie for choices she makes be them good or bad. But what you are left with is a strong woman who will stop at nothing to free her self from what binds her. And a mystery that will keep you on your toes all the while giving you the creeps. You might just want to close the curtains and make sure no ones watching.
