BEFORE Edie is the friend that Heather has always craved. But one night, it goes terrifyingly wrong. And what started as an innocent friendship ends in two lives being destroyed.
AFTER Sixteen years later, Edie is still rebuilding her life. But Heather isn't ready to let her forget so easily. It's no coincidence that she shows up when Edie needs her most.
Psychological thriller seems to be a dime a dozen these days, But I think that comes with good reason. I think this genre more than any other brings fear and terror into our own homes. There is something about a good one that creeps into our minds and makes us check the windows and doors and pull our loved ones a little closer. Camilla way is an author I had not heard of before coming to this book. The synopsis sound so great that I had to grab a copy.
This is a book that gives us two leads to follow along with. While this may sound a little confusing the author makes our lives easy by splitting our time with them and also the time period. In the present, we get to spend time with Heather a women who is struggling with life and a baby on the way. She is someone for who life just seems to keep dumping on. We get a first-hand insight into what postpartum depression is like for some women. As a character, she stirs up a lot of emotions in the reader. Her struggle seems to be at an end when an old friend turns up at her door with the promise to take care of all her burdens.
In the past, we get to meet Edie a girl who feels out on the outside of her school world. Things start to look up when Heather walks into her life. Edie is a girl who at times feels a little desperate for companionship. Her actions are driven by this need but there is also something deeper there she wants to look out for her friend when she sees things starting to spiral out of control. But in many respects, she is also very naive as I suppose is indicative of her age. Both these girls have moments when you can see something is about to go very wrong and you kind of want to scream at them to stop.
When going into this book you already know something is going to go hideously wrong between these two girls. One may wonder why after reading the blurb why Edie has chosen to show up now after all these years. It is a question that we have to wonder as the first few chapters effortless stream by. As we spend time in the past the friendship seems to form like any other for girls this age. But the author has a great way of building tension into her story. Like icy cold fingers stroking the back of your neck, you start to see the cracks forming in both the time periods. You can see a dark need for possession starting to form. By the time the truth of why these two haven't spoken in so long comes to the surface you start to feel as broken as these two women. The ending is definitely a very shocking moment and makes you realize that each of these women in the own way has a very broken psyche and is struggling so much in the present.
I loved this book it embodied so much of what I like in a good psychological thriller. That is not to say that at times it's not a difficult read, The subject matter is very dark and the topics it deals with are not something to be taken lightly. These are two women you will feel a great emotional bond with you cant help but not. Just be warned that bond might just break you when the story ends. I now know for some the final chapter is a little confusing but if you spend a little time looking online about England all will become clear. I would definitely recommend this book.
