Clara Solberg’s world shatters when her husband and four-year-old daughter are in a car crash, killing Nick while Maisie is remarkably unharmed. But when Maisie starts having nightmares, Clara becomes obsessed that Nick’s death was far more than just an accident. Who wanted Nick dead? And, more importantly, why? Clara will stop at nothing to find out the truth – even if it makes her question whether her entire marriage has been a lie…

Having read and thoroughly enjoy Kubica's previous book the good girl I thought it might be time to delve back into this authors work. This time around it deals with the tragic death of Clara's husband in a car crash. While others have told her it was a simple accident Clara believes in a few words uttered by her daughter that a bad man was chasing them. It seemed like a promising synopsize and I was intrigued to go deeper into this mystery.

It is difficult not to feel sorry for the heroine of this book she is completely distraught by the death of her husband and unwilling to believe in the official report as to what happened. Clara is someone who is very much led by her emotions she is willing to go to any length to prove she is right in her quest for the truth. She swings from one suspect to the next and with this, I was pulled in the same direction as her.  With each step, she took her accusations always somehow seemed to me to be a very real possibility. If not for the fact she goes on to accuse so many different people I would have been with her. This was a woman he is worn down by looking after too small children and a mother with dementia.  The way the author chose to write her character is like watching a nervous breakdown in slow motion. I found my self-wanting to help her find out the truth just to ease her waring mind. she Is floored and human trying to do her best in a very heartbreaking situation.

The counterpart to Clara is her husband Nick whose story is told in flashbacks leading up to that fatal day. Nick struck me as a good person whose judgment was just not at its best. Whit every step he took to make things better he just dug himself into a deeper hole. The is a guy with no luck. In trying to contain so many secrets he pushes his relationships to there limits.

While I enjoyed this book I came to appreciate that it wouldn’t be for everyone. This is a very slow burner. There is not a lot of action and for the most part, this makes for a different reading experience.  This book is listed as a psychological thriller but for me, this didn’t quite fit. It is a story about grief and how it can mess you up and affect your judgment. And with the best will in the world when someone dies suddenly without warning it reeks havoc on those left behind. When combined with a worn out mother it makes for a dangerous cocktail. In part, I think Clara’s obsession with the truth is a way to escape from her new reality of being a single mother with no job and dwindling finances.

This book was a good change of pace for me. And as I said before while not to everyone taste there was enough to keep my interest and spend a few hours with these characters.
