Kat and her husband Nick have tried everything to become parents, and are on the point of giving up. Then a chance encounter with Kat's childhood friend Lisa gives Kat and Nick one last chance to achieve their dream. But Kat and Lisa's history hides dark secrets. And there is more to Lisa than meets the eye. As dangerous cracks start to appear in Kat's perfect picture of happily-ever-after, she realises that she must face her fear of the past to save her family . . .
So i had already ready Jensen's previous novels The Sister and The Gift before I came to this one. I was a fan of both her previous two books. Her story always managed to hook me in from the start. With this one the subject of surrogacy had me curious. It's a topic that has come up in the news over the past few years. Always with happy smiling face and talk of the selfless act of the women to carry a child that is not her own only to give it up to a happy and waiting family. So what happens when not all is what it seems. Can long buried secrets tear it apart. It was with great hope for a new and thrilling story I jumped in to the pages.
Kate and nick are the happy couple who have enlisted the help of Kate's childhood friend to help them with there inability to have kids. The couple seem happily devoted to each other and their pursuit of a child. Like most people in their situation they have tried the adoption route to have a child in their life. But in their case failed so surrogacy was the next option. They are well written and with both keeping secrets from their pasts you can see them moving around each other in order to keep them from destroying the life they have built. Kate come across as a sympathetic person. With everything that happens to her you want to believe her. Even at the high when even she begin to question everything that happens to her. Nick try's his best to believe in his wife with every step down the rabbit hole he starts to believe the stress is getting to Kate. Lisa as the Surrogate for the pregnancy intrigued me. Forever being stuck between a rock and a hard place. What motivates a women to go through this even if its for a friend. Can money be the ultimate factor or do these women including Lisa find some other motive deep inside them to go through this.
Jensen's story come across effortlessly written. She is a master at mystery story's. Setting us up with people you believe in. They are always with in the realms of possibility. Because of her writing style the pages fly by and you can never quiet bring your self to put them down. Her choice in centring a story around family's involved in surrogacy was a good choice. She manages to take an event that's suppose to be a beautiful thing and twist it in to a tale of dark secrets and betrayals. As I came to the last few chapters my mind was racing as to how thing where going to pan out for each of our hero's. With and ending that both seemed feasible and fitting it was a pleasure to read. Her use of flash back chapters to fill in the blanks of the story was used to great effect. This only adding to the suspicions of us the read as to who we could trust. Several times I though I had worked out who was the bad guy of the story only to have my thought turned upside down by the next flash back or jolt in to the present.
This was another fine book from a great author. And no point has does she stumble in these books she delivers to us. I managed to get through this in a couple of nights. I found myself lost in the story. With enough twist and turns to keep up the suspense. It is one I would highly recommend.
